History of the Van Buren County Poorhouse at HPL, Sept. 17
The Van Buren County Poorhouse played an important part in the community as it provided medical assistance as well as housing to those in need. Some people stayed a day, others for many years. The Poorhouse was in many ways self-sufficient. It was a functioning farm that was worked by the residents and the residents also had house responsibilities.
