There is a murderous rampage in the fen! Visitors and naturalists have witnessed the carnage. A female Chinese Mantid is filling up before producing eggs. These mantids, or praying mantises, grow to four inches and are capable of catching and eating a hummingbird. Their smaller neighbors, the European Mantids, are also fearsome predators. Neither species is native to Michigan or even the United States.
