Love is in the air for all sorts of animals, not just us humans. The primary environmental cue for animal reproduction is the photoperiod. This is measured as the number of sunlight hours versus the number of darkness hours. Each animal species has a critical photoperiod (the magic ratio of sunlight hours to darkness hours) that drives the production of hormones.
