The Watervliet City Commission Board held their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2023 at City Hall to attend to city matters.

Police department news

The Watervliet School District worked with the Watervliet Police Department to acquire another resource officer. After applying for a grant, the school was approved. According to Chief Sutherland, the grant is $120,000 a year that is non-ending at this point. The police department is working with the superintendent of schools to work out all the details, including decisions, equipment, and finding the right individual for the job.

Chief Sutherland announced that there are potentially three more squad cards coming in April, along with in-car cameras and body cameras. The department is working on applying for the grants needed to be able to make this happen. More details to come.

Planning Commission changes

With Jennifer Helms’ term as City Commissioner expiring in December 2022, she took time to review her commitment in all the boards and volunteer activities where she was involved. Helms decided to ease her way out of her role on the Planning Commission, stating that she feels the planning commission is in good hands with capable leadership and members.

The City Commission welcomed Travis McKinney, a 15-year resident of the City of Watervliet, as a new member of the Planning Commission to fill the vacant seat. McKinney has a strong interest in what happens in Watervliet and a great pride for his hometown. Travis is also part of the Paw Paw Lake Rotary Club and in line to be the next President Elect for 2023.
