St. Patrick’s Day Celebration plans nearly complete for annual Coloma event
By Lynn Mainwaring-Attila Plans are being finalized in Coloma to celebrate that one day a year when everyone is an Irishman. Many of the favorite events in years past will be reprised on Saturday, March 17. 5K Run/walk The third annual St. Patrick’s 5K Run and Walk, sponsored by Southwest Michigan Racers, and hosted by Coloma’s LEO Club is slated for 8:00 a.m. registration and 9:00 a.m. start time. Participants will begin and end at Coloma Township Hall; following a scenic lake route. New to the event this year is CHIP timing, posted finish times, and eligibility for overall and age group awards. Fees for CHIP timed participants is $25 until March 16 or $30 day of the race (18 year & over). Walker/runners 17 years and under will be assessed $15 on race day. Individuals interested in participating but not concerned about time or awards are encouraged to sign up for the 5K Fun Run/ Walk. Fees for this category are $15 through March 16 or $20 on Race Day for ages 18 and over; $10 through March 16 or $15 on Race Day for 17-year-old participants and under. UNTIMED Fun Run/Walk participants do not receive a finish time and are NOT eligible for awards, prizes or t-shirt. Participants in strollers/ wagons/ wheelchair are free and of course dogs are also free. These individuals are not eligible for t-shirt or other giveaways. Proceeds from this event will benefit Paws with a Cause and HOPE Resources. Pre-registration may be done online. Family friendly afternoon Coloma Public Library will be featuring a Book Sale, 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and Children’s Story Hour and Craft, 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. North Berrien Historical Museum will again sponsor a self-guided Scavenger Hunt for the wee folk (age 6+) and their families on museum grounds between 2:30 and 4:00 p.m. Questions may be addressed to the museum at 269-468-3330; firstname.lastname@example.org. The entire family is invited to enjoy an Irish Stew Dinner served at the United Methodist Church (church with bell tower) 5:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Cost of the meal will be by donation and will benefit HOPE Resources Food Pantry Building Fund (formerly North Berrien Food Pantry). St. Pat Lighted Parade The delight of every St. Paddy’s Celebration is the Lighted Parade; this year, at a later start time of 8:30 p.m. There is no entry fee for this event and awards are planned in these categories: Float, Marching Unit, Costumed Individual and Decorated Vehicle. During 2017 festivities, the Coloma community hosted the first parade of the year and awarded more than $1,200 in gold coins and gift certificates to more than 30 parade entries. Entry forms are available at City Hall for pre-registration. Last minute participants are encouraged “to come on out” and sign up at the Coloma Fire Station (170 Washington St.) beginning at 7:30 p.m. Judging will take place during the parade. The parade will proceed through town and end stretching down South Paw Paw St. towards Dairy Queen. Awards will be presented at the Fire Station. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served.
