Vendors Bazaar at Twelve Corners Community Church Saturday Twelve Corners Community Church is holding a Vendors Bazaar this Saturday, July 21 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Lunch will be available from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This fund-raiser includes a bake sale and many vendors including Watkins Products, Wood Products, Mary Kay, Tupperware, Schaus Farm, also ceramics, handmade jewelry and much more. Proceeds from the lunch and bake sale go to the building fund. The church is located at the intersection of Hicks Avenue and Benton Center Road in Benton Harbor.

Mundt family celebrating 99th family reunion August 5 The 99th Mundt Reunion is being held Sunday, August 5, 2018, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Location for this year’s reunion is 7327 Red Arrow Highway in Watervliet. Family members are to bring a dish to pass and table service. A collection will be taken to help with the 100-year family reunion in 2019. Combined winning designs from CHS students become  2018 Glad-Peach T-shirt logo

By Martin Quigley Jr. This year’s festival t-shirt contest began last fall, when all the Coloma High School art classes, under the teaching of Megan Ferguson, started a two-week project. The students’ assignment was to create designs for possible selection to be featured on this year’s Glad-Peach Official Festival T-shirt.

When the project period ended, 70 student designs were submitted to the festival committee for review. The top twelve designs were selected and then two finalists became the winners of the 2018 Glad-Peach T-shirt design contest. Courtney Glass designed a replica of the historical tree carving located in the downtown park. She was working in the classroom on a different design and worked on the tree carving design mostly from home in order to keep her final design a secret. Carissa Richmond designed a muskrat character that was on a peach tree branch with a peach. The festival later named the character Carissa’s Muskrat. It resembles another popular character and could be considered its distant cousin. Carissa’s Muskrat was modified for the t-shirt printing and placed ground-level to the tree carving design and the combined two designs became this year’s t-shirt and theme: “It’s Glad-Peach Pit’n Good!” representing another summer-fun family t-shirt. The festival awarded Courtney and Carissa gift cards to Michael’s for art supplies and later learned the two winners are actually best school friends. Teacher Megan Ferguson said, “The students really enjoyed the t-shirt design project. They learned about client / business relationships and creating a product to satisfy needs. Students were also introduced to a digital way of making art, and although many of them chose traditional mediums, some experimented with the digital process as well. Overall it was an excellent community opportunity for Coloma students and we look forward to next year’s contest!” The official festival t-shirts, in various colors, can be purchased during the festival at the T-shirt Barn located in front of Edgewater Bank.

Former classmates address Paw Paw Lake Rotary Club at July 11 meeting

On Wednesday, July 11 the Paw Paw Lake Rotary Club hosted two guest speakers, Tyler Dotson, Watervliet’s new city manager, and Jeremiah E. Smith the owner of Allegiant Laundry Services in Hartford. Dotson briefly presented his “first hundred day goals” for himself and for the city. He emphasized his commitment to collaboration with the commission, the various boards, business owners and stakeholders but most importantly the people of Watervliet. He indicated his first City Commission meeting went well and was pleased that a number of issues were acted upon and resolved. Dotson stated that “the strength of any community is with its people and we have some great people here in Watervliet.” Dotson hopes to focus on long term planning and work with local stakeholders to continue to build a community where people want to live, work and play.

Smith told of his journey to owning a coin and commercial laundry. One of the specialties of Allegiant is to work within the health care industry and in fact has contracts with a number of hospitals in mid-Michigan. An interesting side bar to the two speakers is they both graduated from South Haven High School in the same year and know each other.
