HARTFORD PUBLIC LIBRARY would like to thank the Michigan and United States Departments of Education for the grant of Spanish/English children’s books for their library collection. They have been building a Spanish/English book collection in the children’s department.
Michigan Blood holding blood drive at Lakeland Hospital Watervliet Oct. 23
Michigan Blood is hosting a series of upcoming blood drives at Lakeland facilities throughout the month of October. The first drive will take place on Friday, October 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Frederick S. Upton Education Center at Lakeland Medical Center, located at 1234 Napier Avenue in St. Joseph. The last drive will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 23 from noon to 6:00 p.m. at Lakeland Hospital Watervliet, located at 400 Medical Park Drive.
Michigan Blood is an independent, non-profit blood bank that is the provider of choice for Michigan hospitals, including Lakeland Health facilities. Community blood drives benefit local patients, including those receiving treatment for trauma, surgery, those with bleeding disorders, and those undergoing treatment for cancer. According to Michigan Blood, one out of every seven people entering the hospital will need blood, and 4.5 million Americans would die each year without blood transfusions. Any healthy person age 17 or older (or age 16 with permission from a parent or guardian) and weighing at least 112 pounds is welcome to donate blood. Participants should plan on 45 to 60 minutes for the entire donation process, including a brief pre-donation health screening and a snack/rest period following donation. Arts, Crafts & Vendors Show at Watervliet Middle School
Lakeland Hospital, Watervliet Auxiliary will host their annual Arts, Crafts and Vendors Show Saturday, October 20, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. The show will be held at Watervliet Middle School, 450 E. St. Joseph St. (Red Arrow Highway) look for Craft Show signs. Sandwiches, chips, desserts and beverages will be available for purchase. Admission is free.
Coloma church youth group holding coat drive in recognition of Homeless Awareness Day
The Impact Youth Group of New Life Christian Center, 6674 Paw Paw Avenue in Coloma is recognizing Homeless Awareness Day on Friday, October 19, 2018 from 6 – 9 p.m. They will be collecting gently used/new coats, hats, gloves, and scarves of all sizes to raise awareness to the fact that we have thousands of homeless people right in SW Michigan. All items collected will be distributed to those in need during the months of November and December. The youth need the help of community members, who are able, to be a blessing to those that are in need this winter. Donations can be dropped off at the church during the time listed above.
HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS Coloma Lions to hold their annual Great Pumpkin Derby as part of Coloma’s Halloween festivities
It is pumpkin racing time again in Downtown Coloma. The Coloma Lions Club has announced the 3rd Annual Great Pumpkin Derby will be held on Saturday, October 27 near City Hall in Downtown Coloma. There will be three classes of racers this year. There will be a race for Competing Area Merchants, an Open Class that anyone can enter and a separate Lions Club Challenge Race. There is also a “Best Decorated Racer” prize. The format will be double elimination and the eventual Grand Champion will be decided by a run-off race between the three class winners. Kits that include the legal wheels can be purchased for $15 at the Coloma True Value. Anyone wanting to build their own racer with their own hardware is allowed subject to the rules. The application to participate and the rules are available at the True Value Hardware. Participants must pay a $10.00 entry fee per racing pumpkin. Cash Prizes to be paid to the winners. Kids Halloween Party at Coloma F.O.P. #147 On Saturday, October 27 the Coloma F.O.P. #147 at 3470 Angling Road is having a Kids Halloween Party from 2 – 5 p.m. The free fun includes a haunted maze, games, prizes, food and weather permitting, a hayride.
