Changing conversations

Imagine a young boy walking on the beach with his father in hand. They walk together, gentle surf occasionally washing their feet as they parallel the ocean on this sunny afternoon. The boy’s security is obviously his dad’s presence because when he spies a shiny shell and releases his dad’s hand to investigate, he is quick to return when an incoming wave appears to be more threatening. Not much conversation. Just a presence and a touch.

Years later, same boy, and same father on the same beach. The boy, no longer holding his father’s hand, stays close enough to have conversation above the sound of the crashing, rising tide. Both are looking down as they walk, deep in thought and with occasional glances into each other’s eyes as they discuss things that dads discuss with growing sons. From a distance you can see them stop, look up, then proceed together down the beach. Occasionally the dad puts his hand on his son’s shoulder in a reassuring gesture of support. They walk on, disappearing in the cool evening mist.

Years later, same boy, and same father on the same beach. Notably, the footprints’ stride in the sand match more closely now. The conversation is different now. The father’s presence has become a joy for the son. They can share experiences now, having weathered many storms together. There is laughter in remembering troubles turned to triumphs, and defeats turned to blessings. The conversation ends with a hug.

Christians are encouraged, “Be anxious about nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7, NASB)

Changing conversations is one peaceful reward of a growing life-walk with Jesus Christ. New appreciation for His presence, wisdom, and love is like a hug from God.
