No matter what part of the original Christmas story we hear, we encounter angels. The angel Gabriel interrupted Zachariah’s routine when he stood beside the altar of incense in the Temple announcing Zachariah’s coming fatherhood of John, the forerunner of the Messiah. That same Gabriel would later pay a surprise visit to Mary at her Nazareth home. The shepherds outside Bethlehem met angels too. Joseph and the wise men got angelic messages in their dreams. Angels show up everywhere in the Christmas story. Maybe that’s why some people top their Christmas tree with an angel.
