Coloma Township focuses on resolutions to serve the taxpayers, extends property tax due date to February 29

Coloma Charter Township Board met on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024 at the Coloma Charter Township Hall. This month’s meeting focused on committee reports and updates on the broadband internet project.

Committee reports

North Berrien Community Development reported that the next event for the community will be the St. Patrick’s Day parade on Saturday, March 16 at 8:00 p.m.

Coloma Township Police Chief, Wes Smigielski reported that the police department is running smoothly and was involved in recovering stolen property.

Medic 1 ambulance service is working efficiently and is now also operating out of Watervliet.

Great Lakes Rescue/Drone reported that the average time for responding to an emergency call is 4 minutes 52 seconds. They are committed to giving back to the community.

Coloma Public Library receives grant

Mary Harrison, Coloma library director, reported that the library received a grant from the Berrien Community Foundation to purchase books and furniture for teens. She also informed the community that the library will host a monthly “Parent Connect” meeting.

Board approvals

Treasurer James Fulton presented a resolution to enter into a contract with ARPA and Midwest Energy (MEC) to expand internet service in underserved areas in the township. The board unanimously approved adopting this resolution.

The board also unanimously voted to extend the property tax due date to February 29.

Public comments

Larry Morrin asked about the progress of the water spill off issue that he shared with the board at the December meeting. Supervisor Parrigin explained that the problem is being addressed and should be resolved in the near future.

George Schubkegel had a question about a letter that was going to be mailed concerning rental properties. The board explained that a newsletter is in the process of being completed.
