Corewell Health Lakeland hospitals earnnational recognition with an “A” gradefor patient safety

Two Corewell Health Lakeland hospitals - St. Joseph and Niles - earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade for fall 2023 from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit watchdog that sets standards for excellence in patient care. This national distinction recognizes the achievements of the hospitals in protecting patients from preventable harm and error.

“We take great pride in being recognized by Leapfrog as an “A” hospital at both the Niles and St. Joseph locations,” said Robert Nolan, D.O., vice president of quality, safety and experience at Corewell Health South. “The tremendous work our collective teams dedicate to quality, safety, exceptional care and patient experience is reflected by this score.”

The Leapfrog Group assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country twice annually. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 30 national performance measures from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Leapfrog Hospital Survey and information from other supplemental data sources. Taken together, those performance measures produce a single letter grade representing a hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors.
