A deep rumbling woke me up from a sound sleep early one morning in upstate New York. We were living in Fulton. The sound was a low frequency hum that increased to its loudest when the house began swaying. We were on the second floor. I immediately went to the basement to assess any damage. I noticed a beam resting on a post that if it slipped two inches, the back of the house would lose a central support.
