Harvest season in SW Michigan
There’s something special about Southwest Michigan in September.
The days get a little shorter, the mornings get a little cooler, college football is back, and across our communities, farmers are working from sunrise to sunset to bring in another year’s harvest.
For those of us who live here, harvest is more than a season on the calendar. It’s part of who we are.
As a member of a fourth-generation farming family, I know that harvest represents far more than what we see from the road. Farmers spend an entire year preparing for these few weeks. They plant when conditions are right, watch the weather, care for their crops, maintain equipment, and make countless decisions that most of us never see.
Agriculture remains a vital part of Southwest Michigan, supporting thousands of jobs and producing everything from corn and soybeans to blueberries, vegetables and fruit. But beyond the economic impact, farming is part of the character of our communities. It is families passing knowledge from one generation to the next, neighbors helping neighbors and people working hard to provide for their families and ours.
