August is winding down, and that means the yellow buses are about to hit the roads again across Southwest Michigan.
Behind the excitement of the first day, there is a massive amount of preparation. Teachers are in their buildings long before the first bell, setting up their classrooms and organizing lesson plans. Parents are working to coax kids back into reasonable bedtimes while tackling the annual back-to-school shopping lists.
Let’s be honest: Those lists aren’t cheap. Between shoes the kids have somehow already outgrown, new backpacks, notebooks, and fees for sports and extracurriculars, the costs add up fast. It’s a stressful time for a lot of families, especially right now when the price of just about everything, from the grocery store checkout to the monthly utility bill, is stretching household budgets to the breaking point.
