I&M Electric offers energy-saving tips to keep the holidays merry

From houses decked in festive decorations to shoppers rushing to finish their gift lists, it’s beginning to look and feel like the holidays. Whether people plan for holiday travel or desire to be the brightest house on the block, Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) is encouraging homeowners to incorporate energy efficient practices this holiday season. With simple steps, like those below, residents can save energy – and possibly a little money – on their next bill.

Rock around the holiday tree... on a timer: Control the time lights and put decorations in action each day by using a timer. Cutting down the hours these are on can lower energy use on your bill.

Deck the halls with LED lights. Lasting 10 times longer than traditional bulbs, LED bulbs use just a fraction of the energy conventional bulbs use.

Joy to the holiday baking: Coordinate baking times to include multiple dishes at once to reduce energy use from your oven. Remember to keep heat where it belongs; don’t open the oven door for any premature peaks.

Oh, silent furnace. Planning holiday travel? Lower your thermostat to 55 degrees before leaving. This will save energy and prevent water pipes from freezing. Hosting a holiday party instead? Ovens running and extra people around can raise the temperature in a home, so be wise and save by turning the heat down as guests arrive.

Take advantage of an open fire – chestnuts optional. Lower your thermostat setting when using a fireplace, as it will provide heat for a space. Don’t forget to close the damper when the fire is out to prevent cool air leaks.
