Lake Michigan College to host free performance of Broadway hit “What the Constitution Means to Me” for Constitution Day

Lake Michigan College will mark Constitution Day this year with a free performance of Heidi Schreck’s acclaimed play “What the Constitution Means to Me,” open to the community. The performance will take place on Thursday, September 17 at 2 p.m. in the Mendel Center’s Hanson Theater.

The event is presented through a collaboration between the University of Notre Dame and The GhostLight Theater, and is sponsored by LMC Votes!, the College’s nonpartisan voter engagement initiative. Following the LMC performance, the production will continue its run at GhostLight Theater.

Direct from Broadway, What the Constitution Means to Me breathes new life into the U.S. Constitution and imagines how it will shape the next generation of Americans. As a teenager, playwright Heidi Schreck earned her college tuition by winning Constitutional debate competitions across the country. In this hilarious, hopeful and achingly human play, she resurrects her teenage self to trace the profound relationship between four generations of women in her family and the founding document that shaped their lives.

Directed by Oliver Butler, Schreck’s timely and galvanizing play became a sensation off-Broadway before transferring to Broadway, where it earned two Tony Award nominations among numerous other accolades. The New York Times called it one of the most important plays to open on Broadway in recent memory.
