Hartford District Library News
March is Reading Month! Children from elementary school age through high school may enter the Hartford Public Library 2022 Spring Reading Challenge. Each participant who reads five books, within their reading level, will be entered to win a gift card. The challenge runs March 2-30; one entry per person. It is required that the five books be checked out from the Hartford Public Library.
The library is encouraging entries to the 2021-2022 “Anthem” essay contest. The contest is open to all 8th through 12th graders who are 13 years or older. The participant must read “Anthem” by Ayn Rand and choose an essay topic from three questions provided by the Ayn Rand Student Essay Contest. The essays must be submitted before April 28. The top prize is $2,000; (3) second prizes of $500 each; (5) third prizes of $100 each; (25) finalist prizes of $50 each and (50) semi-finalist prizes of $25 each. Essays must be 600-1200 words and written in English only. The library has a limited number of copies of “Anthem” to give to participants. For complete rules, see aynrand.org/contests.
On Thursday, March 17, the library will be having a 3D printing class at 3:30 p.m. Sign up in advance or send an email to hartfordlib@yahoo.com.
March 31st is National Crayon Day; the library will be giving away crayons at 4 p.m. There is a limited supply, first come basis.
Coloma Public Library news Teen Study Group
Any teen needing help with homework or a quiet place to focus can go to the Library from 4-5 p.m. on Wednesdays for their Study Group. Grades 6-12 welcome.
Paws for Reading-new schedule
Certified therapy dogs, Margaret and Pailey, are in the Children’s Department for reading sessions every other Thursday from 4:30-5:30 p.m. This program is intended for children in kindergarten and older. Each individual literacy session is 15 minutes; must preregister.
St. Paddy’s Book Sale
Shoppers can save some green at the library’s next big book sale on Saturday, March 12 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Most items are .75 or 3 for $2.
Book club
The Coloma Public Library Book Club meets every other Thursday in the Community Room at 4 p.m. The public is welcome to participate. Check the library’s website for the upcoming meetings.
Toddler/PreK Story Times
Interactive story times with music and movement at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays.
The Coloma Public Library has expanded service hours to the following: Monday-Thursday 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Current program schedules are located on the home page of the library’s website. Watervliet District Library news
The Watervliet District Library has a new service to offer. After many months of planning and preparation, the new Seed Library will soon be ready for patrons.
The Seed Library is a place where community members can pick up seeds, take them home to plant, harvest and enjoy. Harvested seeds from a productive plant are saved for next year, some to keep and some to return to the library to repeat for the next growing cycle. Watervliet library staff has collected over 130 vegetable and flower seed varieties. A QR code links gardeners to planting instructions. All seeds are free, but patrons are limited to taking no more than five packs per week.
An Open House for the Seed Library is set for Monday, March 7, from 3-7 p.m. The first 20 people attending will receive a pre-selected salsa or salad pack, and a biodegradable seedling starter kit. Helpful “how to” brochures and sun catcher kits for kids will also be available.
Crafts & Kits
March pinteresting projects are now available. This month’s project: Leprechaun gnomes. Crafters can choose their own embellishments to complete their project. Registration is required in advance.
Teen events
MiLibraryQuest, an online scavenger hunt for teens, continues through March 15. Winter Quest 2022 features the theft of a (fictional) best-selling author’s laptop which contains the only copy of their new book. Teens will search participating library websites to find the clues to find the laptop. Teens can enter for the chance to win prizes.
