When Gabriel announced to Zechariah that even in his old age, a son would be born to him, Zechariah was doubtful and challenged the possibility. Gabriel was not happy with Zechariah’s response and explained, in clear terms, that he was Gabriel, and that this message was indeed authentic. Because of Zechariah’s disbelief, and by Gabriel’s decree, he was consigned to being mute until the child was born. Angels take their assignments seriously, and there can evidently be negative results for doubting their messages. Zechariah discovered that.
