The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a Town Hall meeting on Thursday, June 23, in South Haven, Mich., to discuss the agency’s actions to ensure the safe operation of the Palisades Nuclear Plant and the assessment of the plant’s performance. The facility is operated by Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc., and is located in Covert, about 5 miles south of South Haven. The meeting is scheduled for 5-8 p.m. at the Beach Haven Event Center, 10420 M-140, in South Haven. The meeting will start with a poster session from 5-6 p.m., followed by a presentation from the NRC staff and a town hall-style meeting. Phone lines will be available during the presentation and town hall portion of the evening for those unable to attend in person. Details are available by calling 630-829-9620. “This year, our annual assessment meeting is specifically geared to a meaningful dialogue between the agency staff and the public. We will provide information and engage members of the community on a wide range of NRC’s actions and plant-specific topics we know have been of interest,” said NRC Region III Administrator Cynthia D. Pederson. “The poster session will enable members of the community and NRC subject-area experts to engage one-on-one; the NRC’s presentation will detail the agency’s activities to ensure plant safety; and the Town Hall meeting is designed for an open and productive conversation between NRC staff and the public.” The NRC determined that the Palisades facility operated safely in 2015. The plant was under increased NRC oversight for the first three quarters of 2015 due to a finding of low-to-moderate safety significance for the plant’s failure to accurately calculate radiation doses to workers during an activity in 2014. After conducting a follow-up inspection, the NRC concluded that the plant has appropriately resolved the issue. As a result, Palisades began to receive the normal level of NRC oversight during the last quarter of 2015. Palisades will continue to receive the NRC’s normal level of oversight during this year. Inspections are performed by two NRC Resident Inspectors assigned to the plant, inspection specialists from the Region III Office in Lisle, Ill., and specialists from the agency’s headquarters in Rockville, Md. Among the areas of performance to be inspected this year by NRC inspectors are radiological safety, spent fuel storage, and the plant’s ability to identify and resolve problems. The annual assessment letter sent from the NRC Region III office to the company and the most current performance information are available on the NRC website.
BIG AL’S CHICAGO HOT DOGS RIBBON CUTTING… Several community leaders celebrated a ribbon cutting ceremony with the crew at Big Al’s Chicago Hot Dogs earlier this spring. Cutting the ribbon is “Big Al’s” brother Daniel, he was also joined by Karla Smother of the Coloma Watervliet Area Chamber of Commerce, Coloma Mayor Jim Polashak, Dave Scheuer also from the CWACC, and Berrien County Commissioner Bill Smith. Big Al’s is happy to be in Coloma and looking forward to an amazing summer.
Big Al’s Chicago Hot Dogs
Growing up in Chicago, Al Storino has fond memories of the couple who sold hot dogs on the street corner in his Chinatown neighborhood. His grandparents came from Italy and ran a grocery and meat market there as well. This all ties into his desire to open a place to get authentic Chicago style hot dogs in Coloma. Known around town as Big Al Storino, opened Big Al’s Chicago Hot Dogs in 2015. He is located on the corner of Center Street and Sassafras and serves more than just hot dogs. You can get several different Italian specialty foods and he has recently added Sherman’s ice cream to his lineup. The hot dogs and other meats are actually made in Chicago to his recipe and imported to Coloma. Along with the fantastic food Big Al is hoping to appeal to a younger crowd and offer them a safe place to play games and buy candy and the like. He also has a fresh produce stand operating on the property during the growing season and is working with different car and motorcycle groups to schedule cruise-ins. The next car cruise in will be on June 21 and his goal is to have a different group about every two weeks throughout the summer. Though he is from the Chicagoland area, and still owns a plumbing company in Skokie, he feels very comfortable in Coloma. His family has been vacationing in the area for over a 100 years and he says he has spent every summer for his entire life in Coloma. He says he loves the people in Coloma and is finding this venture “very enjoyable”. Recently the Coloma Watervliet Chamber of Commerce celebrated the expanding of his business with him and hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony. Chana Kniebes said that everyone enjoyed the “grand opening” event. “We are excited as Al continues to expand his business and the items that he carries” said Kniebes “and wish him the best in his business”. Overall Big Al says things are going well. He is grateful for all of the compliments and delighted when especially young families come in to eat. He is looking to carry things that no one else in the area does and is “happy to be here”.
