Stupid people ruin holiday weekend at Silver Beach County Park
In response to calls of shots fired at Silver Beach County Park, police officers from several jurisdictions came to render aid for the priority call that occurred on Monday, May 30 just before 9 p.m. Police were able to identify the shooter and those involved and arrests were made soon after the incident. Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey said that Velver Robinson of Elkhart, Indiana was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, reckless discharge of a firearm, concealed weapon violation, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Deontae Harris also of Elkhart, Indiana was charged with two counts of carrying a concealed weapon violation, Officers located and identified the individual (Robinson) that was responsible for possessing and shooting a handgun near the restrooms. This individual was taken into custody and interviewed. The individual minimized his involvement but did confess to possessing the handgun and attempting to conceal it after the crime. Officers believe they have recovered the handgun used and it will be sent to the Michigan State Police Crime Lab for confirmation. Officers also identified a second vehicle related to the incident and discovered two more handguns illegally possessed by the vehicle’s owner (Harris). This individual was also interviewed and provided a partial confession. Both individuals were lodged at the Berrien County Jail and were arraigned on Tuesday. The Sheriff’s Office would like to commend the public’s help in identifying the individuals responsible, as well as the actions of the responding Officers from several jurisdictions. Both played key roles in quick arrests of these two criminals. Sheriff Paul Bailey told WNDU-TV that no one was hit or injured. He said that he was actually at the beach when the shots rang out and went to assist with arriving officers. He told WNDU that during the interview process it was determined that some people from Elkhart got into an argument with some of the local people and that led to them pulling out the weapons. Police had been called to the beach earlier Monday evening around 7:35 p.m. before the shooting began on a report that people were yelling and screaming. Officers left about 8:03 p.m. when all seemed calm, only to have shots ring out at 9:00. A judge today set Robinson’s bond at $100,000. If anyone who was at the Silver Beach County Park at this time would like to speak to detectives about the incident, please contact the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau at (269) 983-7141, ext. 7224. Sheriff Bailey would like to thank citizens for their time and help in making Berrien County a very special place on the Lake.
