Press Box Player of the Week:

Our Press Box Player of the week for March 2, 2023 is Watervliet’s Tia Caldwell.

Tia is a junior guard on the Lady Panther basketball team and also played a key role on the volleyball team the last two seasons. In the spring the speedy Tia leads the track team’s sprinters, running the 100, 200, and this spring adding the 400 to her repertoire.

Caldwell has been playing basketball in Watervliet for eight years and found herself in the spotlight on the starting team after an injury to teammate Ellie Golden. She had a pair of big steals resulting in fast break layups in the recent game against Bridgman and has played excellent defense all season.

In volleyball she was also a defensive specialist, recording 229 digs along with 30 aces while being named First Team All-Conference. Tia was the Press Box choice for most improved player in 2022 and was a key part of the team’s run to the regional finals this season. Her favorite part of the two sports “would have to be my team and being able to experience the season with the same girls I’ve played with for all these years and making new memories.”

Tia said her favorite sports memory at Watervliet, so far, was beating Bronson in a big upset at volleyball regionals in 2022. She says, “The energy was just amazing. My team is so fun and so hard working. When we can’t give 100% there is always another player stepping up.”

Outside of school she likes to hang out with her friends, read, sew, and try new hobbies that she picks up randomly for a few months at a time. Her favorite class at school is physics, one of the few classes she takes that are in a traditional classroom setting. After graduation she hopes to attend a university but she’s not decided where or what she’ll study yet.

Good luck and congratulations, Tia!
