Press Box Player of the Week: Wyatt MacMillan

January 11, 2024 Press Box Player of the Week is Watervliet’s Wyatt MacMillan.
Wyatt is a sophomore on the Panther wrestling team and while still in the early stages of his varsity career he’s already making an impact. He’s known on his team for falling behind in points, wearing out his opponent for two periods then looking to capitalize on a mistake and hopefully get a pin. It’s a risky strategy but it seems to be working for him, so far. Wyatt said “the “MacMillan” is a strategy I started where I tire them out then flip them on their back.”
It worked this past Saturday where he had three pins in a huge and strong 190-pound bracket to run his record to 10-14 in the early part of the season, a respectable showing for a sophomore in a traditionally tough weight class. He’s usually underestimated at 190, where the wrestlers are usually older and physically chiseled. He will fight to get points and is smart and patient on the mat. Once he gets his opponent in a bind he’s good at finishing them off.
Wyatt has been wrestling since he was in 8th grade and is still learning and working to become a feared opponent. He also plays football for the Panthers.
His favorite class at school is woodshop and his favorite teacher, so far, is Mr. Tremblay in his weight training class. He would like to eventually attend Western Michigan University and own his own business.
Congratulations, and good luck Wyatt!
