On Thursday, Nov. 12, hundreds of volunteers across Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties will come together to help local seniors prepare their yards and homes for winter.
Whether someone has raked in the program offered by United Way of Southwest Michigan year after year or this will be their first time, now is the time to build a team and register.
A few hours can make a big difference.
For many older adults, fall yard work isn’t just difficult. Raking leaves and cleaning gutters can put seniors at risk for falls and serious injury. Hiring someone to do the work may not be financially possible, either.
That’s where the community comes in.
Rake A Difference connects volunteer teams with seniors age 60 and older who need a helping hand with raking, bagging leaves, and cleaning gutters. The service is provided completely free of charge to participating seniors.
Any able person is called to gather their coworkers. Bring together family, recruit friends, classmates, church group, club, or organization. Then spend a few hours together doing something that makes a real difference for a neighbor.
