Last Sunday, we remembered the horrific events that took place twenty-one years ago on September 11th, 2001. They always say you remember where you were when certain events happen. In my time in Congress, September 11th is a day I will always remember. Going back-and-forth between the Capitol and my D.C. residence, which is a mile from the Pentagon, seeing the hole and smoke coming from the building, joining my fellow lawmakers on the congressional steps to sing God Bless America, and for months after seeing the giant American flag covering that hole and scorch marks when I traveled to the office. I witnessed the bravery and heroism of first responders and rescuers at the Pentagon and World Trade Center firsthand. And honor the heroism and sacrifice of those on United Flight 93, who likely saved the U.S. Capitol and all those inside. This will be my last time as a Congressman to thank them, but I will be forever grateful to them and all who responded that day.
