The 2016 Berrien County Youth Fair got off to a soggy start on opening day, Monday, August 15. Almost four inches of rain, sometimes in a straight up downpour, made grassy areas muddy and cemented areas puddles. Crowds were very thin by evening when on the normal first night of the fair, arts and crafts exhibitors would be hustling to the barns to see how they did. The traditional long lines at the Korn Dog Stand and the Steak Tips stand were not present. The Tri County Super Shootout Tractor pull scheduled for the Grandstand on Monday night was cancelled. Tickets purchased may be turned into the grandstand ticket office for a full refund. That ticket office is open from 2:00 – 7:00 p.m. daily. While rain was still drizzling on Tuesday morning, it did clear up. Carnival rides were expected to open as normal at 11 a.m. Circus Continental put on shows at 1:00, 4:00, and 7:00 p.m. Grandstand shows for the remainder of the week are Country Music star Craig Wayne Boyd on Wednesday, Happy Together on Thursday, Bull Mania on Friday, and on Saturday it is Diesel Domination. Fair gate costs are $7 for an adult day pass, $4 for a child’s day pass, and $5 for seniors age 65 and over.
Berrien County Youth Fair has new king & queen
Brittany Litka of Buchanan and Austin Soos of Berrien Springs will represent the Berrien County Youth Fair as the queen and king at this week’s fair. The new royalty were chosen during a contest in the Grandstand at the fair. First runner up to the king and queen is Mikaela Schuhknecht of Buchanan. The new king and queen will have a busy week serving as public relations representatives of the fair, handing out ribbons and trophies, and attending ceremonies and concerts throughout the week, in addition to showing their exhibits. Miss Litka is a 20-year old student at The University of Notre Dame/Ivy Tech where she plans to pursue a degree in business administration. She shows in the poultry, rabbit, goat and swine departments. She is the daughter of William Litka and Jennifer Parsons. Mr. Soos is an 18-year old student at the University of Michigan where he plans to pursue a degree in computer science. He shows in the dairy, swine home economics, and horticulture departments. He is the son of Todd and Noreen Soos. Miss Schuhknecht is an 18-year old student at Southwestern Michigan College where she plans to pursue a degree in nursing. She shows in the equine and flower departments. She is the daughter of Jennifer Schuhknecht. Just before the king and queen contest, the Berrien County Youth Fair held its fifth annual Prince and Princess Contest. The contestants were aged anywhere between 9 and 12 years old and were required to be a current BCYF exhibitor. Paxton Beyer of Baroda and Tyler Miller of Niles will serve as this year’s BCYF Prince and Princess. Duties of the prince and princess are similar to the duties of the king and queen so you will be sure to see them around the fair attending various ceremonies and also serving as public relations representatives. Miss Beyer is 9 years old. She shows in the rabbit, swine and craft departments. She is the daughter of Art and Betsy Beyer. Mr. Miller is 10 years old. He shows in the swine, craft and home economics departments. He is the son of Daryl and Katie Miller. The 71st annual Berrien County Youth Fair kicked off Monday, August 15 and ends Saturday, August 20 with the theme “Kick Up Your Heels”.
