Pokagon Fund donates to Hartford Public Library
“Kute Kids”…This Kute Kid is Ava Brielle Thomas! She turned 7 years old on July 25. Ava will be a first-grader at Watervliet South Elementary School this fall. Her favorite activities include cheerleading, dance, hanging out with her friends and family and doing crafts with her 4-H club. She is a sweet and sassy little girl with a big heart. Ava is the daughter of Dennis Thomas Jr. and Kassie Thomas. She has one brother, Jacob. Share a photo of your “Kute Kids” with your friends, neighbors, and relatives who read the Tri-City Record. Millions of Americans use computers in public libraries on a daily basis to access essential information, engage in distant learning, apply for jobs and passports, or advertise their business. According to a recent study released by the Information Use Management and Policy Institute at Florida State University, 85% of libraries say they are not able to meet demand for computers at certain times of the day. Stephanie Daniels, Director of the Hartford Public Library, understands this situation all too well. “I could speak for hours about the benefit we are giving to our local community through access to computers,” said Daniels. “As new technology emerges, many people turn to librarians for instruction. Our greatest benefit to the community is teaching our patrons how to manipulate and understand technology, especially those who don’t own a computer,” added Daniels, a 23-year veteran librarian. Thanks to a generous gift from The Pokagon Fund, the Hartford Public Library recently expanded its technology capability through the creation of a Children’s Tech Center, adding six new computer workstations. “The new computers allow us to accommodate more people, especially during the summer when demand is at its peak,” explained Daniels. Public libraries rely on public as well as private funds to meet the growing needs in their communities, which is the reason The Pokagon Fund over the past eight years has awarded a total of $34,000 in technology grants and over $43,000 in total grant funding to the Hartford Public Library. “We understand that libraries, especially those in rural communities, need support for ongoing costs including Internet access fees, technology upgrades and technical assistance,” stated Roger Radar, who currently serves on the Board of The Pokagon Fund. “We’re grateful that the community has the library as a local resource,” added Radar. The Pokagon Fund is a nonprofit private foundation located in New Buffalo, MI. It is funded by revenue from The Four Winds Casino Resort. Grants are awarded to nonprofit and governmental organizations in Southwest Michigan, as well as Hartford and Dowagiac, MI, and South Bend, IN. Since the organization’s inception in 2007, The Pokagon Fund has provided over $22 million in grant awards and scholarships to enhance the lives of the families in their service area.
WHS 40 Year Club reunion

Plans have been finalized for the 2016 gathering of WHS graduates. Any person that attended or graduated from WHS is welcome to attend. Also, any former employees of the Watervliet Public School system are welcome to attend. The date of this year’s reunion is Saturday, August 20, 2016. The FOP Lodge in Coloma, located at 3470 Angling Road, Coloma, will be hosting. Due to the ongoing construction at the Watervliet Middle/High School, a change of venue was warranted. A social hour at 11:00 a.m. will begin the festivities, followed by a catered lunch at noon. This all-school reunion is a great way to see fellow Watervliet High School students, teachers, and staff members from the past. Whether you were a “Maroon” or a “Panther”, stories will be re-told and memories will come alive. The cost is $15.00 per person. Paid reservations are due by Saturday, July 30, 2016.
