Seeing down the road

The headlights on Volkswagens back in the 60s were never very bright. I had the opportunity to own two VWs during my more youthful Philadelphia days. One was a green “bug” with a 40-horsepower engine. The paint on it was dead, but with advanced spark timing and a few other things I did to it, it was pretty peppy. I discovered that in a pinch it also fit nicely on some wider downtown Philadelphia sidewalks. Then I had a blue VW “squareback” - very useful and with a little more powerful engine. Standard shifting made the VWs fun to drive. But those headlights. A little dim.
