Seeing victory

There are no victories without battles, and there is no overcoming without obstacles. At the age of fifty-three, Eugene Bartlett Sr. had a serious stroke that changed his life. He could no longer speak or walk, and for the next four years before his death in 1941, he struggled with his limitations. He had been a gospel music singer, writer and successful publisher, and had developed a teaching career that now was no longer possible. It is reported that he also occasionally suffered from depression. Not a lot is known about Bartlett’s private life. He had married, and had two sons. He was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1973. He wrote and published many gospel hymns, and co-founded the Hartford Music Company, serving as its president from 1918 to 1935.

Yet, in the midst of the darkness of his struggles, Eugene Bartlett Sr. penned one of his most famous songs, “Victory in Jesus.” Tracing God’s blessings to him throughout his life, beginning at his salvation and continuing to God’s present care, he ended the song with an expression of his assurance of God’s eternal blessings in his future. It is a song of confidence, victory, and hope.

As he expressed in the words of one stanza, “… And then I cried, ‘Dear Jesus, come and heal my broken spirit,’ and somehow Jesus came and brought to me the victory.”

The song “Victory in Jesus” expresses numerous truths. Redemption comes from Jesus’ victory for us at Calvary. Power for living life comes from Jesus’ daily soul-healing victory in our hearts. Hope for eternal life gives the assurance we’ll sing with the angels about Jesus’ victory.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be known unto God, and the peace of God, which surpasses understanding, will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)
