“The Divine Right of Kings” “Manifest Destiny” “Mandate of Heaven” … Slogans by which rulers seek to establish their authority. Sometimes reflected in national anthems, sometimes found in emerging political expediencies, such phrases express our felt need to justify national existence. I think of three passages (too long to reproduce here), that describe another overriding principle of power:
