The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Department of Van Buren County has announced the launch of an exclusive digital collection of historic plat books, now available for public access at
https://www.vanburencountymi.gov/625/Plat-Books. This collection featuring editions from the years 1873, 1895, 1906, and 1912, has been meticulously digitized and is presented in an interactive flip-book format. Additionally, these historic treasures are downloadable in PDF format, catering to the needs of historians, genealogists, educators, and anyone interested in the rich tapestry of the county’s past.
Historic plat books serve as essential tools for understanding the evolution of land use, ownership, and geographical features over time. They provide an in-depth look into people from the past, revealing the framework of communities and the development patterns that have shaped Van Buren County.
“The digitization of these historic plat books not only preserves our county’s legacy but also makes it readily accessible to a broader audience. This project is a testament to our commitment to preserving and sharing our historical heritage, fostering a deeper connection between the past and present,” said Jerry Happel, GIS Director for Van Buren County.
The county is continually looking to expand their digital archives and invites anyone with knowledge or access to pre-1929 plat books, not currently featured in their collection, to contact the GIS Department. Your contributions can play a vital role in enriching understanding and preservation of the county’s historical landscape.
