When Joshua ‘fought the battle of Jericho,’ he could have full confidence of a victorious outcome. He had been promised by God, “I have given this city into your hand.” The promise came from the ‘Angel of the LORD.’ Joshua met him while on a nighttime reconnaissance mission in the hills surrounding that ancient walled city. Surprised to find another warrior with drawn sword in the hills that evening, Joshua, probably with drawn sword himself, approached this foreigner and pointedly asked, “Are you for us or are you for them?” gesturing toward Jericho. The angel’s reply was astonishing. In Joshua 5:14 and 15 we find, “No, but I have come as captain of the hosts of the LORD… Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.”
