Police Reports By Annette Christie Watervliet Township Police Activity Berrien County Sheriff’s Deputies Puffer and Goff spent a good portion of January responding to weather related incidents. They assisted motorists during eight incidents, made 45 traffic stops, and wrote 49 tickets. Puffer noted that some of those tickets were for driving too fast for conditions. The pair made seven misdemeanor arrests, assisted other agencies for 29 incidents, and made 99 building checks. In addition, the Reserve Unit with the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department checked the safety and security of 36 homes. Puffer and Goff had 56 original complaints and nine that required a follow up. Coloma Township Police Activity The Coloma Township Police Department had 160 complaints in the month of January with 29 arrests. Of their 116 traffic stops, they wrote 24 citations. Driver charged in double fatal crash The driver of a vehicle involved in a double fatal crash has been charged with ten different counts and was arraigned last week in Van Buren County 7th District Court. Jose Humberto Canedo, 23, of Benton Harbor was the driver of a vehicle that crossed the center line and into the path of another car head on, February 12 in Hartford Township. The accident occurred in the 60,000 block of Red Arrow Highway. Canedo had two passengers in his vehicle; a one-year-old male and a six-year-old female. Skylinn Salinas, 6, of Coloma succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the other vehicle, Mary Fender, 73 of Paw Paw, was deceased at the scene. She also had a passenger in her vehicle, a 57-year-old female from Paw Paw who was transported to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan. At the time of the accident she was listed in critical condition. Canedo faces the following charges: Count 1 – Homicide in the second degree of Skylinn Salinas; Count 2 – Homicide in the second degree of Mary Fender; Count 3 – Operating with a high blood alcohol content (.17 or more) causing death with prior conviction; Count 4 – Operating with a high blood alcohol content (.17 or more) causing death with prior conviction; Count 5 – Operating with a high blood alcohol content (.17 or more) causing serious injury with prior conviction; Count 6 – Operating with a high blood alcohol content (.17 or more) causing serious injury with prior conviction; Count 7 – Operating license suspended, denied, revoked causing death; Count 8 – Operating license suspended, denied, revoked causing death; Count 9 – Operating license suspended, denied, revoked causing serious injury; and Count 10 – Operating license suspended, denied, revoked causing serious injury. Bond was denied.
