Police Reports By Annette Christie Coloma shooting being investigated In the overnight hours of June 26, 2020, emergency responders were sent to a home at 5576 Paw Paw Lake Rd. to investigate a home invasion. While en route, police received information from the Berrien County 911 operators that the homeowner may have shot the intruder. Coloma Township Police Chief Wes Smigielski provided in a press release that there was a home invasion at a Coloma Township home. The homeowner, when confronting the individual that allegedly broke in, fired a gun. The homeowner, whose name has not been released yet, came out of the home once police arrived and placed his hands in the air. Once inside the home, police located 47-year-old Kevin Cox. Smigielski said that the homeowner and Cox did not know each other. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office, Watervliet Police Department, and the Tribal Police Department assisted at the scene. Upon the completion of the investigation it was forwarded to the Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office for review. Prosecutor Mike Sepic confirmed on Tuesday that the review was complete with the exception of autopsy results. Once those results were in, the review would be final.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over This Independence Day, the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office is participating in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement campaign. During the holiday weekend, law enforcement will work to put an end to drunk driving. In support of law enforcement’s dedication to protecting the lives of residents in their communities an increased enforcement will be seen on the roads with zero tolerance for those who drive impaired. If you’re heading to Fourth of July parties this summer, remember: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.
