Coloma Township Police Department
Several emergency services agencies responded to a motorcycle vs. vehicle accident on I-94 on August 21, 2017 at 8:55 p.m. The accident occurred on eastbound I-94 near the 38.4 mile marker.
Coloma Township Police Officers responded to the priority call and found that a motorcycle driven by Michael Feller, 66, of Wellston, Michigan and a passenger vehicle driven by Hannah Joseph, 23, of Grand Blanc had crashed. Feller was determined to be deceased at the scene. Joseph received minor injuries.
The agencies involved besides Coloma Township were the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department, the Watervliet Police Department, the Michigan State Police, Pride Care Ambulance Services, and North Berrien Fire Rescue.
The cause of the crash has not been determined and the case remains under investigation. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department Accident Investigation Division is assisting with the accident reconstruction. No further information is available.
Watervliet Township Police coverage
For the month of June, the officers providing police coverage in Watervliet Township made 24 misdemeanor arrests and three felony arrests. They had 52 total traffic stops and issued 48 citations. In all the officers performed 56 building checks, including both residential and business. There were 56 original complaints and 13 follow-ups.
For the month of July officers provided additional traffic duty near the road construction sites on M-140 and Red Arrow Highway. Deputy Guy Puffer said that between he and Deputy Goff they made 24 misdemeanor arrests and three felony arrests. In all there were 108 traffic stops resulting in 73 citations. Puffer said that things went pretty well at the construction project at County Line and Red Arrow Highway and the construction crew was pleased with the extra police assistance. The extra police patrol actually increased the number of arrests due to suspended licenses, warrants, drug possession, and drunk drivers. Officers also made 108 residential and building checks during the month, investigated 50 complaints, and had 12 follow-ups.
Watervliet City Police Department
On August 19, 2017 Watervliet Police Officer Kusmierski, while on patrol, stopped Nikolas Ramone Lewis of Benton Harbor for a moving traffic violation.
Through investigation it was found that Lewis had two outstanding arrest warrants for probation violation and contempt of court out of Berrien County Fifth District Court.
Lewis was lodged at the Berrien County Jail on the two warrants.
On August 17, 2017, Officer Kusmierski was on duty and observed a traffic crash at the intersection of St. Joseph and Main Street. Upon investigation, it was found that Kathy Louise Peapples, whom was intoxicated and a suspended driver, had turned into the side of the oncoming car causing the traffic crash. Thankfully, no one was injured in the crash.
Peapples was lodged at the Berrien County Jail pending a case review by the Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office.
On August 20, 2017, Watervliet Police Officer Horton, while on patrol, stopped a vehicle for an equipment violation at S. Main Street and I-94. The driver of the vehicle was Ira John Clough.
During the stop, it was found that Clough was a suspended driver and was a parole absconder from the Michigan Department of Corrections. He was charged with driving with a license suspended, 2nd offense and the warrant for parole violations. He was lodged at the Berrien County Jail.
