LOIS STEPICH Lois Evelyn McGaughey Stepich was born February 16, 1942 to Phyllis Olson McGaughey and Emil Rankin McGaughey in East Chicago, Indiana.


She grew up in Highland, Indiana, graduating from Highland High School before earning her degree from Indiana University. While at Indiana, she met Joseph Stepich and they married in 1964. They settled in Flossmoor, Illinois where they raised their children, Suzanne and Greg. After retiring, they moved to Watervliet Michigan, becoming a part of the Paw Paw Lake community. Lois loved being on the water; spending summers on Shafer Lake in Monon, Indiana where her parents had built a home, and then on Paw Paw Lake. She loved nature, music, sunsets, cocktail cruises, and being with her friends and family. She enjoyed volunteer work, and was a long-time member of Flossmoor Service League, Flossmoor Community Church, PEO Chapter JA Illinois, PEO Chapter DV Michigan, and the South Haven Garden Club. Her favorite role was that of “Nana” to her four granddaughters who she loved “to the moon and back”. Lois died Sunday, Oct. 11, 2020 at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan. She is survived by husband Joseph; children Suzanne Stepich Lewand and Gregory Stepich; son-in-Law Tom Lewand; granddaughters Cayleigh, Paige, Shannon, and Erin Lewand; brother and sister-in-Law Bill and Mary Ann McGaughey; step-sister Linda Davis and step-brother John Bruington. She also leaves behind many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews, wonderful friends, and her devoted beagle Lacey. She graced many lives with her kindness and compassion and will be missed by all who she touched. There will be a private burial service, with a celebration of life to follow in the summer of 2021. DANIEL L. HUTCHINS Dan’s life began August 1, 1952 in Watervliet. He was a lifetime area resident and graduate of Watervliet Public Schools. On August 28, 1971 he married his high school sweetheart Cheryl Dillenbeck and they enjoyed 49 years together raising a family, working, and playing.

Dan owned several AMOCO gas/convenience stores in St. Joseph. He loved his community and served Watervliet Township as a trustee for four years and supervisor for 16 years. Dan enjoyed NASCAR making many trips with Cheryl to watch races, he also enjoyed living and playing on Paw Paw Lake. Dan was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Watervliet and Knights of Columbus Council 4055. Dan’s greatest joy was his family and spending time with his grandchildren.

Dan leaves behind a loving family to cherish his memory including: his wife Cheryl; three children Jessica (Michael) Woodworth, Daniel Scott Hutchins (Jonathan Stevenson) and Gina (Scott) Schiming; six grandchildren Ben and Morgan Woodworth, Madalyn and Evan Hutchins, Zachary and Kayla Schiming; two brothers Mike (Jane) Hutchins and Bob (Janyce) Hutchins; three sisters Pat (Rick) Vawter, Mary (Larry) Doroh, and Kathy (John) Curtis; and many nieces and nephews. Dan died Saturday, Oct. 10, 2020 at home surrounded by his loving family. His parents G.W. and Norma (Morlock) Hutchins precede Dan in death. Friends may visit with Dan’s family Thursday, Oct. 15, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at Hutchins Funeral Home in Watervliet. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, October 16, 2020, 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Watervliet with burial following in Fairview Memorial Cemetery in Watervliet.

MARDELLE JANE SAURBIER Mardelle Jane Saurbier, 90, of Hartford, passed away on October 7, 2020 in Niles.

She was born on September 11, 1930 to the late Henry and Veoda Parsons in South Bend. On August 14, 1953 she married John F. Saurbier in Benton Harbor. Jane, as she preferred to be called, was a long time member of America Chapter No. 234 Order of the Eastern Star. As a 1948 graduate of BHHS, she then earned a diploma from LMC in 1973 after diligently studying to be an RN, thereafter being employed by the former Mercy Hospital, Benton Harbor, and then what is now Bronson Lakeview Hospital in Paw Paw. She loved her Church, arts and crafts, furniture restoration of all sorts, bowling, historical places and things, and not least of all her family – her husband of 31 years, John. Mardelle is survived by her son, Gregory Saurbier; daughters, Cynthia (Robert) Frazee, Virginia Cobb, Deanna (Mike) Harris; sister, Sue Ann Chesher; 4 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
