Police Reports By Annette Christie Early morning crash injuries teens Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel Abbott reports that on October 30, 2018, deputies were dispatched to the 50K block of County Road 687 in Hartford Township for a report of a car that had crashed into a tree. Upon arrival, deputies and first responders located a 17-year-old female passenger from Hartford who had suffered a broken leg. She was transported by Pride Ambulance to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. The driver was identified as a 15-year-old male from Hartford. He suffered minor injuries to his ankle and was transported to Watervliet Hospital for treatment. The driver told police that they were headed back from Grand Junction when he swerved to miss a deer and ran head on into a tree in a yard. The driver also advised that he did not have a driver’s license and was driving his friend home in her car. Charges will be sent to the Prosecutor’s office for review of operating without a license causing serious injury. Motorcyclist dies in accident with truck The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fatal traffic crash on October 24, 2018 at 8:02 p.m. Emergency responders were dispatched to the accident that occurred at the intersection of M-140 and 48th Avenue in Watervliet. Upon arrival police found a motorcycle driver on the ground semi-conscious. He was taken to Lakeland Hospital in Watervliet where he later died from injuries sustained in the collision with a pickup truck. Investigators learned that a motorcycle driven by Bobby Tanner, 70, of Bangor, was northbound on M-140 approaching 48th Avenue when an eastbound pickup driven by Steven Riggs, 34, of Watervliet was crossing M-140 and pulled into the path of the motorcycle. The motorcycle could not avoid striking the rear of the pickup. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Unit is continuing the investigation. Once the investigation is complete, a report will be forwarded to the Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office for review. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the collision. The agencies assisting with the scene include the Berrien County Sheriff Road Patrol, Berrien County Traffic Crash unit, Covert Township Police, Watervliet Fire, Covert EMS and Fire, the Watervliet City Police Department, and the Coloma Township Police. Parole absconder arrested Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel E. Abbott reports that the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office received information about possible drug activity and a wanted parole absconder staying in the 55,000 block of 56th Street in Lawrence. Deputies arrived on scene and made contact with two subjects sitting inside of a bedroom with the window open. Deputies attempted to talk to the subjects, but both started trying to destroy methamphetamine paraphernalia. Deputies ordered several of the people inside of the house to exit and also located David Sewell, 21, of Hartford, hiding in the bathroom. A search warrant was obtained for the property and several methamphetamine items were located inside of the house along with finished product methamphetamine. In addition to Sewell, officers also apprehended Felina Snider, 29, from Lawrence who was arrested without incident. The situation remains under investigation.
