Police and Fire Reports By Annette Christie Farm accident causes fatality Van Buren County Sheriff’s Deputies and other rescue personnel responded to a call of an unresponsive male at the Red Arrow Dairy Farm in Hartford on November 30 at approximately 6:35 a.m. Responders found other farm employees trying to perform emergency life-saving efforts on 35-year-old John Garth Cummings from Middleville, Michigan. Rescue personnel also made life saving efforts; however, Cummings was pronounced dead at Lakeland Hospital, Watervliet. Deputies conducted an investigation and it was determined that the 35-year-old worker who was sub contracted for a company out of Grand Rapids, Michigan was on site to conduct testing. The victim was found by another worker, buried in what is called corn silage which is fermented high moisture food fed to cattle. The preliminary investigation appears that the victim was near the approximately thirty-foot high corn silage when for unknown reasons some broke away from the stack falling onto the victim. Officials from the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) were contacted and are currently conducting an investigation. The Hartford Police Department, Pokagon Tribal Police, Pride Care Ambulance Service, and the Hartford Fire Department assisted at the scene. North Berrien Fire The North Berrien Fire Rescue Department responded to 21 calls in the month of November. Of the calls two were for structure fires. The calls were made as follows: Coloma City, 6; Coloma Charter Township, 6; Mutual Aid Calls, 3; Hagar Township, 6.
