Barbara Ann McQuiston (née Masters), age 84, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2026, in Watervliet, Michigan, surrounded by her loving family. Born on Sept. 2, 1941, in Little Rock, Arkansas, Barb lived a life filled with love, devotion to her family, and a deep faith that guided her through the years.
Barb pursued her education at Lake Michigan College in the 1970s, where she was just one semester shy of earning a degree in tool and die. Her professional journey included roles as a switchboard operator at Ludwig Drum Company in Illinois, a factory worker at Auto Specialties in Hartford, Michigan, and later as a school bus driver for Watervliet Public Schools where she retired after more than 25 years. Barb loved it when her kiddos would introduce themselves years later and reminisce about riding the bus and listening to her Bob Segar music blaring through the speakers! In each role, Barb brought dedication and hard work … and quite possibly a laugh or two.
A woman of many talents and passions, Barb was an exceptional seamstress in her younger years and created intricate crocheted doilies and table runners that showcased her skill and patience. She had a green thumb and found joy in gardening and tending to flowers. A lover of crossword puzzles and storytelling, Barb could captivate those around her with tales from her youth that often ended with hearty laughter. Above all else, she was a fantastic cook and baker—a talent she cherished most—and delighted in preparing meals for her loved ones.
Barb’s faith was central to her life. She worshipped faithfully at Calvary Bible Church in Benton Harbor, Michigan, until illness prevented her from attending. Her generosity, kindness, loyalty, and fierce love for her family were evident to all who knew her. She especially treasured time spent with her three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Family gatherings held a special place in Barbara’s heart—particularly the annual Masters Family Reunion.
Barb is survived by her children: daughters Lee Anna McQuiston and Samantha (Scott) Droskie; son James McQuiston Jr.; her beloved grandsons: Caleb (Elissa) Wendzel; Michael (McKenzie) Droskie; James (Katelyn) Droskie; her seven great-grandchildren: James, Emmaline, Liam, Isla, Kordelia, Georgia, and Scottie; and her two younger brothers: Roy (Shirley) Masters Sr. and Ray Masters, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband of more than 50 years, James McQuiston Sr., along with her parents and several siblings, and her sister-in-law and best friend, Betty Jo Thurman.
The family would like to thank Corewell Health Hospice, specifically Jenny, Karin, and Penny, for their kindness and compassion during this difficult time. A special shout-out to our cousin Angie Kirby for her help in caring for mom, to Uncle Donny for working on mom’s barn apartment, and finally to Aunt Shirley who continuously checked in for updates and kept our extended family members informed so that we were able to care for mom without interruption during her last days.
Barb’s legacy of love and laughter will live on through the memories shared by those who knew her best. May her memory bring comfort to all who mourn her passing.
Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life gathering will be scheduled at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Corewell Health Hospice - Royalton, 4025 Health Park Lane, St. Joseph, MI 49085.
