BETTY JEAN SMITH

Betty Jean (Arent) Smith, 87, of Coloma passed away May 24, 2021 at her home. Cremation has taken place. A private family graveside service will be held, with a Celebration of Life Gathering to be held in July.


Donations in memory of Betty Jean may be made to the Susan G. Komen for a Cure breast cancer organization, of which she was a survivor. Duffield & Pastrick Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services is assisting the family with arrangements. Betty Jean was born May 27, 1933 in Coloma, to Charles and Alice (Cole) Arent. She was a Life Member and Past Worthy Matron of Coloma Eastern Star #307. She was also a lifelong member of Coloma United Methodist Church.

As an avid crocheter, and knitter, Betty Jean always had a project started. She loved spending time with her family, and could frequently be found at local school events supporting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her five children: Gloria (Doug) Thar of Florida, Connie (Bob) Kennedy of Benton Harbor, Don (Robin) Smith Jr. of Watervliet, Kathy (Smith) Butler of Coloma, and Alice (Smith) Hauch of Coloma. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and sisters: Mary Lou (Lawrence) Eckoff and Dorothy (Martin) Hemminger.

In addition to her parents, Betty Jean was preceded in death by her husband Don Smith Sr. and a sister, Sarah Ann Smith.
