Coloma Baseball
The Coloma varsity baseball team hosted Berrien Springs on Wednesday, May 20, for a non-conference doubleheader, looking to start the final week of the regular season with a successful night against the Shamrocks, a former rival in the Lakeland Conference.
In game one, it went the full intended distance, with the Comets trailing early, but recovered in the middle innings for a win, 8-4. After the teams traded runs in the opening inning, Berrien Springs got three runs in the top of the third inning, for a 4-1 lead. But Coloma took exception to that, with the offense responding by scoring five runs in the bottom of the third, claiming the lead for good at 6-4, before adding a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In game two, it went the full seven innings, with the tables reversed as the Shamrocks handed the Comets a tough loss, 6-5. Coloma started strong, with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and a run in the bottom of the third inning to grab a 3-0 lead, but five runs in the top of the fourth inning by Berrien Springs flipped the script, with an insurance run in the top of the fifth inning proving big when the home team got two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but got no closer.
Carson Coble (CG, 5 K) was the winning pitcher in game one. The Comet offense smashed 13 total hits, led by three hits from Logan Wilkins (two singles, double), with three additional players providing multi-hit nights: Dakota Brown (single, double), Lucadis Fonseca (two singles), and Maverick Kraemer (two singles). Wilkins drove in a team-high four RBI.
The team traveled to Lawton on Thursday, May 21, for a non-divisional conference doubleheader, looking to close out the regular season with a pair of road wins over the Blue Devils, who entered one game under the .500 mark.
In game one, it went the full seven innings, with the Comets scoring in five of those frames in a win, 11-0. After a scoreless first two innings, Coloma erupted offensively, starting with single runs in the top of the third and fourth innings, for a 2-0 lead. The men in green and gold continued their assault with two runs in the top of the fifth and seventh innings and five runs in the top of the sixth inning, while holding Lawton to just a pair of hits in a dominant effort.
In game two, it went six full innings, with the mercy rule enacted after a dominant shutout win, 10-0. While the Blue Devils struggled to muster only one hit, the Comets got out of the gate strong, scoring four runs in their first at-bat. The score would remain the same through four innings before Coloma got back to adding to their lead on the scoreboard, scoring three runs in both the top of the fifth and

sixth innings, getting the necessary outs needed for a sweep.
Treyton Myers (game one) and Logan Wilkins (game two) combined with Matthew Hejduk on two games of scoreless baseball, totaling 19 strikeouts on the mound. The Comet offense smashed 18 total hits, with three players providing three hits each: Dylan Groendyk (two singles, double), Maverick Kraemer (single, two doubles), and Myers (two singles, home run). Groendyk and Myers drove in a team-high three RBI each.
