It was announced by Holtec International last month that it will be building two small modular reactor (SMR) units at the Palisades Plant, located in Covert. The plant itself is on track to restart by the end of 2025. Holtec estimates that the filing of the Construction Permit Application (CPA) for the two Holtec Palisades SMRs, will be scheduled for 2026 and the target date for the first SMR plant is currently slated for mid-2030. However, this will be dependent on the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC’s) regulatory reviews and oversight of the SMR, which is likely to be the nuclear industry’s first.
