Giving thanks for the greatest nation

As we gather with our families for Thanksgiving, it is important that we reflect on the values that have made America one of the greatest nations in human history. Our founding was a great experiment in self-governance that fanned the flames of liberty all across the world. Our founding was rooted in the principle that government should exist to preserve and protect the natural, God-given rights of its citizens. Guarantees to the rights to life, liberty, and property are enshrined in our founding documents.

Though the political landscape is constantly shifting one way or another, and we may not always agree with the direction our government is going at any given time, I still believe that our system—a Constitutional republic with balances of power between its own branches and between local and larger governments—is one of the finest examples of how a country should be run. For this, we should all be grateful.

America has endured many trials and tribulations over the past 250 years, but we always emerge from a struggle. In more recent history, division between Republicans and Democrats, between those more conservative and those more liberal, between the “right” and the “left,” have caused turmoil and tumultuous events across our nation and even within families. Despite these difficulties, I am grateful for the many viewpoints and opinions that make up our citizenry. We will remain a great nation, and we will continue to shine as a beacon of liberty for all the world to see.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving, I implore everyone to reflect on their friends, their neighbors, their families—those they may agree or disagree with—and be grateful for the multitude of ideas, cultures, opinions, and perspectives that comprise our great nation.
