Help with Medicare open enrollment is only a phone call away

Medicare health and drug plans can make changes each year—things like cost, coverage, and what providers and pharmacies are in their networks. From Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, all people with Medicare can change their Medicare health plans and prescription drug coverage for the following year to better meet their needs.

People in a Medicare health or prescription drug plan should always review the materials their plans send them, like the “Evidence of Coverage” (EOC) and “Annual Notice of Change” (ANOC). If their plans are changing, they should make sure their plans will still meet their needs for the following year. If they’re satisfied that their current plans will meet their needs for next year and it’s still being offered, they don’t need to do anything.

To help seniors navigate this process a team of trained, volunteer counselors is standing by to help the community during Medicare Open Enrollment. The Michigan Medicare Assistance Program (MMAP) through the Area Agency on Aging is there to assist Medicare beneficiaries in Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties in understanding their health benefits.

“If you or a family member are over 65 or otherwise eligible for Medicare, now is the time to review your coverage and benefits so you can make informed decisions about your plan for the coming year,” Regional MMAP Coordinator Kara Gargano said.

Medicare Open Enrollment provides an opportunity to understand what changes someone can make to their current coverage, review current Medicare health and drug plans, and review the changes to the program.

Insurance companies can make changes to Medicare plans each year that can impact an insured’s out-of-pocket costs. This can include monthly premiums, deductibles, drug costs, and provider, or pharmacy, co-pays.

“MMAP counselors are highly trained, unbiased volunteers who will help you sort through the noise insurance companies are making during Open Enrollment and help you choose the right plans for you,” Gargano said.
