HERBERT R. HUNN Jr.

Herbert R. Hunn Jr., of Coloma, formerly of Kankakee and West Chicago, passed away on Jan. 3, 2023 surrounded by his family and loved ones.

Funeral services were held on Jan. 7, 2023 at Riverside United Methodist Church with burial taking place at Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek. Memorial donations in Herb’s memory may be made to the church or to Paw Paw Lake Rotary. Those wishing to leave an online message for the family may do so at www.duffieldpastrick.com.

Herb was born March 21, 1948 in Chicago to Herbert Sr. and Ruth (Hopkins) Hunn. He was on the swim team throughout his high school years and strived to better his own times, as he set records, many still hold today. He joined the Air Force in 1968 and upon completion, continued his education to become a licensed funeral director. Herb then began his career as a funeral director working at Leonard Memorial Home in Glen Ellyn, IL and Clancy-Gernon Hertz Funeral Home in Kankakee, IL each for 20 years.

When his kids were growing up, he loved watching and coaching them while they played baseball and participated in other activities along the way. Following retirement, he became his son’s right hand man in his business, Jason Hunn Builders. Throughout his lifetime, Herb lived in West Chicago and Kankakee and enjoyed his card nights with friends.

He volunteered for many organizations such as VVA and ESDA, an emergency service association. Herb found a love for this area and would fish with his son, while the girls shopped in South Haven. Herb was a faithful grandfather, never missing a ball game or activity even if it meant driving a distance several times a week. His special gift was to always be there for them, they were his priority. His pride in them was limitless.

Herb was a proud member of Rotary Clubs in both Illinois and Michigan, serving as both club president and Assistant District Governor during his most active years. He always gave himself to the church no matter where he was living or what church he attended. He enjoyed watching all different sports, doing jigsaw puzzles, and looking after his dog, chickens and rabbits while working in the yard.

Herb will be missed by his wife Marilyn, whom he married April 18, 1970; his children Jason Hunn and Janelle (Nathan) Rieder; his grandchildren Michael Hunn, Isabelle Hunn, Kailee Seppelfrick, Liliana Seppelfrick, Lexie Rieder and Nate Rieder; and one great-granddaughter Luna Hunn. He is also survived by his siblings, Robert (Francene) Hunn, Nancy (Mike) Wisniewski and Terry (late Dany) Romeo; and many nieces, nephews and church families.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his half brother Jeff Hunn.

A special thank you to Herb’s home health team and Caring Circle’s professionals for their tireless care, especially his OT and PT teams.
