James Frederick Chartrand, 88, of Stevensville, MI, passed away on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at Woodland Terrace in Bridgman, MI. Arrangements have been entrusted with Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, MI.
James was born in Sault Saint Marie, MI, on April 26, 1937, to the late Arthur and Alma Chartrand. He was a 1956 graduate of Benton Harbor High School and thereafter attended Benton Harbor Community College. He served in the U.S. Army reserves.
James was a former Vice President of Shepherd Casters in St. Joseph and retired as President of Lakeshore Marble Company in Stevensville. He was a charter member of Peace Lutheran Church and a member of the Berrien Hills Country Club.
On Dec. 1, 1990, in Stevensville, he married Elaine Hildebrand, she survives James; also surviving are his two sons – Thaddeus (Cate) Chartrand and Matthew (Jackie) Chartrand; step-children – Timothy (Darcel) Hildebrand, Thomas (Sarah) Hildebrand, Cathy (Ray) Dalrymple and Connie Hildebrand; grandchildren – Megan Chartrand, Marcus Chartrand, Nicole Chartrand, Courtney Chartrand, Hillary (Seth) Meyer and Bradley Dalrymple; great grandchildren – Faith, Eden and Jonah; sister – Diann (Bill) Ford; and nieces and nephews.
James is preceded in death by his parents – Arthur and Alma Chartrand; brother – Arthur Chartrand; and a sister – Jo-Ann Hollacher.
Visitation with the family is on Thursday, May 29, from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m., at Peace Lutheran Church – 3590 Lincoln Ave., St. Joseph, MI. A Memorial Service celebrating James’s life will follow at 11 a.m. at the church with Pastor Brent Walker and Pastor Ron Schmidt officiating.
