RIP BOB... Received word this last week that longtime Watervliet resident and friend, Bob Becker had passed away. I have sat on many boards and committees with Bob. His commitment to Watervliet made him a standout in my book.

SHOP YOUR HOMETOWN FIRST… Please include your local businesses in your Christmas shopping - there are plenty of opportunities to fill the gift baskets and stockings. Don’t forget making a donation to your local charity. They can always use a bit of help.

HOMETOWN CHRISTMAS... Wow what a great day to be in Watervliet. This past Saturday was the Annual “Hometown Christmas” Celebration; kudos to one and all involved in this magical day. I may be partial but Santa’s elves at the Tri-City Record were my favorite!

SANTA’S ON HIS WAY… It looks like Christmas will arrive in three Mondays. That should allow the youngsters ample time to be on their best behavior if they are worried about any transgressions left not rectified.

Our children didn’t display any serious issues with the Jolly Old Elf’s list of good kids or bad. The girls seemed rather nonchalant, so sure they were on the good list.

Now the boy was a different story. I could tell he was worried. I vaguely recall he had some nervousness about the whole Santa thing and his role in good vs. evil. If there was any doubt, one Halloween he picked out a devil’s costume and couldn’t wait to scare the kids that were out begging.

Well, the night of all-hallowed eve arrived. He took a look in the mirror and saw the devil himself. He told his mother he was going to take a bath, and then to bed to read.

Since that time, he was more receptive to the idea that good behavior had its’ own rewards. At least up to middle school anyways. As did his sisters as well.

The older sister told the younger there was no Santa Claus. When the youngest started to cry, big sister said she could prove it and showed the presents gift-wrapped and hidden in the attic.

If more proof was needed, big sister tore a hole in the wrapping just big enough to see what was inside. And then she taped it closed.

I’m a sucker for kids and presents, Christmas and birthdays.

I like giving them, and shopping for them. My favorite was taking the grandkids shopping.

Comfort in tragedy

I’ve heard the phrase a lot “the whole world’s a stage.” If that’s true, it’s a tragedy. This past week the world watched as Paris burned and riots erupted in Milan and elsewhere. A shooting in Oregon
