Love in action
We’ve all heard the proverb “Actions speak louder than words.” It’s a phrase that took root in the 17th and 18th centuries, as people became frustrated with the empty assurances of governing officials. You might even say this proverb gave rise to our nation, as the founding fathers took decisive action in response to the tyranny of King George III.
Like much wisdom, this proverb has its roots in Scripture. The apostle John, in the latter years of his life, wrote a letter in which he urged Christians to action, not just talk. And the purpose for their action was to be one thing: love, specifically the love of Christ. He speaks gently to those younger in faith: “Children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.” (1 John 3:18).
