New horizons

Growing older is an adventure all its own. Physical limitations, mental slowing down, memory issues, all expected to plague those advancing in years. Immune deficiencies create disease vulnerabilities. The “It-used-to-be” phrase seems to be heard a lot more often as well. Like in, “It used to be I could do that.” (But not anymore.)

Growing older sometimes gets our attention slowly. Not realizing we were aging at all, we woke up one day to the fact that things weren’t the same anymore.

I would submit that while some things aren’t the same anymore, other things haven’t changed at all. I think denial is a good tact when it comes to feeling decrepit before necessary. Buck up. You’re still here, and as an older coworker used to tell a complaining younger group he worked with, “You’re alive, ain’t it?” (Besides, who knows when it really becomes required to feel decrepit anyway?)

A key to extending meaningful life is staying creative in some new way. Not talking about a “bucket list.” That’s too terminal. What do you do when your bucket is finally full? The first thing you do with that bucket is poke lots of nail holes in the bottom. Then go ahead, try filling it.

David realized that he would someday have to face old age. In Psalm 71:18, we find this request, “And even when I grow old and gray, God, do not abandon me.” In Psalm 139 he noted that God knew all about how old he’d finally become, “You knew the number of my days before there was even one of them.” David had decided to trust God for the duration. He was not disappointed in that decision.

God doesn’t forget us when we grow old. Thank Him for that. Join David in a joyful, fulfilling life of faith in Him, confidently looking forward, without fear, to His return. Explore peacewithgod.net for assurance.
