Not a good start…

Last week, Michigan Democrats secretly passed a $1.1 billion spending bill without the voices of Michigan residents being heard. Instead of holding a committee hearing and allowing residents and their duly elected officials to review the bill and have input on it, the Democrats first action was to hide from the people they serve.

In addition to spending billions of taxpayer dollars, the new majority also decided to pick winners and losers and is planning to raise taxes on every Michigan resident.

Under a law passed by Republicans in 2015, every single Michigander was set to have their income taxes cut. Instead of getting out of the way and allowing people to keep more of their money, Democrats are set to vote on legislation that will block this necessary relief – raising taxes when people can least afford it. The message Democrats are sending is simple: We’re smarter and can spend your money better than you.

In their first weeks in power, The Democrats have also chosen rich pensioners over working seniors. Instead of providing immediate relief to every Michigan senior, as the Republican plan does, Democrats chose to allow only certain types of retirement income, like pensions for former politicians, to be exempt from state income taxes. Other forms of income, such as the hourly wages of any working senior, will be completely taxable. That means any senior who still needs to work continues to get taxed while the well-connected state official with a fat pension gets off tax free. Why do they feel it is OK to favor some over others?

Right out of the gate, the people of Michigan have been shown the Democrats’ fiscally irresponsible spending habits and the failed policy of picking winners and losers. I know here in Southwest Michigan our residents will never forget votes taken to raise taxes on hardworking families who are struggling to put food on the table and gas in their cars. Obviously, these Democrats are wildly out of touch with their constituents and the people of Michigan.
