Press Box Player of the Week: Gavin Morlock

Gavin Morlock, a junior at Coloma High School, and a member of the Coloma Comet men’s bowling team this winter, is Press Box Player of the Week for Dec. 14, 2023.

Gavin was nominated by Comet Athletic Director, Wendy Goodline. Goodline felt he was deserving of this honor because, despite not being mentioned in our newspaper each week, he works hard in practice to better himself and his teams, along with showing superb commitment to his education in the classroom.

In high school bowling, individual effort in team appearances, which include baker and regular matches, go a long way in determining the team’s eventual outcome on any given night. This third-year bowler was an integral part of the Comets last season and was one of the team members that represented the green and gold at the regional competition. This season, the team has started with three wins and he posts an assumed average around 130.

In addition to bowling, Gavin also competes on the soccer pitch in the fall and participates on the track and field team in the spring. Unfortunately the Comets were unable to put together enough players to participate in a soccer season this year, but hope to return to varsity action next fall. Meanwhile, on the track, he spent last season participating in three events, as he ran the 100-meter dash, tossed the shot put and threw the discus.

In the classroom, Gavin takes the role of being a student-athlete seriously and it shows. He is enrolled in the Early Middle College program and plans to continue his enrollment at Lake Michigan College then transfer to a four-year school to study medical science. In terms of clubs and organizations, he is a member of the Coloma Comet band, color guard, the National Honor Society, the Student Council, the Yearbook Club and served on the Prom Committee. In addition, he was recently crowned as one of two Mr. Coloma (along with Ryan Schroeder) and will be representing the community at the Blossomtime Festival.
